A Young Iranian Singer on Top of UK Charts
Darius Danesh, a second generation Iranian, made it to the top of the UK charts on Sunday, Augus 4, 2002, with his first single "Colourblind". Darius, who has an Iranian father and a Scottish mother, entered the music scene via a popular UK TV music show called 'Pop Idol'. His ostentatious mannerisms and antics during the TV program invited ridicule by newspapers and the public at large. Nevertheless, he managed to finish 3rd on the show.
Despite being considered a "laughing stock" by the media, after leaving the show, he made a serious effort to try and enter the music scene. Not giving in to the temptation of releasing a cover track off the back of the fame of 'Pop Idol', he co-wrote "Colourblind" and waited for an appropriate record deal. With the release of this surprisingly successful single, which is deemed by the critics to be "an OK pop tune", he has now got off to the best possible start. "Colourblind is the best way that I can thank the public for their support through Pop Idol, not by churning a cover song out off the back of the incredible success of the programme, but by going in on my own" he was quoted as saying by the BBC. In reaching the number 1 spot, he beat off competition by George Michael, Will Smith and Britney Spears.
